GIS-Based and Outranking Approach to Assess Suitable Pig Farming Areas in the Mediterranean Region: Valencian Community

The concentration of livestock production is problematic due to environmental concerns. European regulations are guiding the sector become increasingly sustainable and, at same time, maintaining population in rural areas. aim was determine suitable areas municipalities where presented as a market option. methodology applied based on combination multi-criteria methods and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, following three steps: removal unsuitable zones by sectoral (STEP 1); urban planning, recommendations 2); evaluating resulting depending importance socio-economic, sectoral, characteristics. This study Spanish region with ongoing conflicts over land use coast but high number risk depopulation interior. results showed that 33% Valencian Community (VC) had outranking for development swine sector. 43 highest scores were because socio-economic factor confirmed low tourism activity key issue development.
